Taylor Russell McKenzie was born on the 18th of July 1994 in Vancouver, British Columbia, and was raised in Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She was raised primarily with her mother's family. She stated that her skin color was a reason that made her feel disregarded by her peers as an infant. They struggled financially, and were constantly in a state of flux, moving their lives 16 times to pursue her father's work. Despite all this, Russell mentioned how in her younger years "there was always an opportunity for reinvention, to create something new."As an infant, Russell was already artistically at first. she desired to pursue a profession in ballet, and later be a painter. At eighteen, she took her first acting class, and finally found her way to. She borrowed money from her job to purchase a car and drive to Los Angeles to audition. Once her money was gone then she would go back home to work, until she earned enough to go back to the audition. This routine continued for four years, and it took until she got her first major TV appearance.
