She worked for The Washington Post nearly a decade covering Grand Slam Tennis and Grand Slam Football, as playing basketball in multiple Olympics. Nichols spent nine years at ESPN, where she won two Emmy Awards. She also worked as a correspondent for Monday Night Football on the network. The next step was to CNN after which she joined Turner Sports. The show she first created and hosted was named self-titled Unguarded with Rachel Nichols, and aired weekly on CNN as well as CNN International. It was watched by more than a billion viewers across the globe. Nichols reported at TNT during this period, reporting on NBA broadcasts like regular season games, playoffs or teams from the All-Star league. The work she did with TBS also included golf and baseball coverage as well as Final Four broadcasts by CBS. Only a woman has been chosen from more than two hundred nominees in the 42-year old history of the award.
